My choice
Being a DJ for 12 years and promoting shows for 6 years, dealing with live sound and music production on my own for most of my life - I didn’t think I needed much more “schooling” in the audio industry but I figured I would round off myself-taught education with some professional schooling. Thinking to myself that I already know a lot, boy was I in for a surprise. I'm from Saskatchewan and finding schooling for audio in the prairies is a hard task, so I talked to some friends and looked online for the best school I could find and all the reviews that I read and the friends I talked to recommended PAVI. When I went to Vancouver to see the studio and classrooms I was blown away by what they had to offer me.
Class time
The classes they gave in September when I started were perfect for the start of the school year, lots of intro stuff in recording, music theory and music business to get me on my way. I took so much away from those classes and was telling my friends back home that they have to check out the school. The second and third semesters got down to the things I wanted to learn more about - live sound, electronic music and DAW class. I had great teachers for all of these classes, all knowledgeable and working in the industry. They took time out of their working schedule to teach us what they knew and it was a great experience and I learned things that I can apply every day in my job and personal projects.
Studio and friends
The studio is awesome. My new friends and I that I met through school have recorded lots of personal projects and brought in bands to do full albums. Some late nights in the studio gives you the feeling of the life in the audio world and I will remember the time I had with friends there. Learning on our own, exchanging ideas with each other, mic placement experiments (some didn’t go so well, good ol' experimenting) lots of mic's to choose from and helpful hints from the staff. Anything and everything you need at anytime of the day or night, someone is always there and knows how to help you.
I would do it again
The school in my opinion was a lot more than I expected, the people, the staff, the equipment were all great and it has helped me in my personal projects and finding work during school and after school was easy. I got a few live sound shows through school and met a few bands that I have ended up recording full albums with, the school gave me some contacts with larger company’s and I got on doing sound for some big festivals and ended up running a full stage with the help of a few school mates at a large festival over 3 days. It made for some good times and I couldn’t have done it with out them, all in all I would recommend PAVI to anyone who wants to meet new people with the same interests and goals and learn a lot on the way in a great and busy city with so much going on. I would do it all over again if I had the chance.
